Types of Extractions

There are two main types of tooth extractions:

• Simple Extractions: These are performed on the visible teeth in the mouth. Simple extractions are usually done under local anesthesia, and the tooth is loosened and removed using specialized instruments.
• Surgical Extractions: These are required for teeth that are not easily accessible, such as impacted teeth or teeth that have broken off at the gum line. Surgical extractions involve making an incision in the gum to remove the tooth and may require stitches to close the site.

When is Extraction Recommended?

Tooth extractions are recommended in several situations where preserving the tooth is not possible or practical:

• Severe Tooth Decay: When a tooth is extensively decayed and cannot be restored with a filling, crown, or root canal, extraction is necessary to prevent the spread of infection.
• Impacted Teeth: Teeth trapped beneath the gum line or coming in at an incorrect angle, such as wisdom teeth, may need to be surgically removed.
• Crowded Teeth: Sometimes, teeth must be removed to create space for proper alignment, especially before orthodontic treatment.
• Gum Disease: Advanced periodontal disease can cause teeth to loosen. In such cases, extraction might be needed to maintain oral health.
• Infection: If an infection has reached the tooth’s pulp and cannot be treated with a root canal, extraction may be necessary to prevent the infection from spreading.

Aftercare Instructions

Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery following a tooth extraction. Here are some tips to ensure you heal quickly and comfortably:

• Control Bleeding: Bite down gently on a gauze pad placed over the extraction site to control bleeding. Change the gauze as needed until the bleeding stops.
• Manage Pain: Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed to manage discomfort. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek can also help reduce swelling.
• Avoid Disrupting the Site: Do not rinse your mouth vigorously. Don’t use a straw or smoke for at least 24 hours to avoid dislodging the blood clot that forms in the socket.
• Maintain Oral Hygiene: Keep your mouth clean by brushing and flossing your other teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site. After 24 hours, you can rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to help keep the area clean.
• Follow Dietary Guidelines: Stick to soft foods and avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy items for a few days. Gradually reintroduce solid foods as you heal.
